NeuroWave to Develop a Portable Closed-Loop Anesthesia System (AutoTIVATM)

CLEVELAND HEIGHTS, Ohio (May 12, 2010) - NeuroWave Systems Inc. announced today that it has been contracted by the US Army (US Army Medical Research and Materiel Command) to develop the AutoTIVATM , a portable closed-loop anesthesia system, based on its NeuroSENSE® Monitor.

The AutoTIVA system will be capable of automatically controlling the administration and infusion rate of intravenous anesthetic and analgesic drugs to patients undergoing surgery or sedation. The system will act as an “autopilot” for anesthesia, thereby allowing anesthesiologists to concentrate on higher level tasks, while leaving the minutiae of maintaining the patient at a proper anesthesia level to the AutoTIVA device.

The ground breaking concept of the control of both sedative and analgesic agents based solely on brain activity was pioneered in the early 2000s by a team of researchers from Foch hospital, Suresnes, France and was subsequently demonstrated as fully functional and promising in a large multi-centric controlled study. The AutoTIVA system will use an improved operating concept, where quantitative brain activity measures will be provided continuously and in real-time by NeuroWave’s NeuroSENSE system, the latest generation brain function monitor.

In 2010, the Foch research team validated the potential of the NeuroSENSE to automatically deliver anesthesia to surgical patients based on a control algorithm designed by Professor Guy A. Dumont from the University of British Columbia (Vancouver, Canada), a world expert in Control Systems.

“Closed-loop anesthesia holds great promise for improving the consistency and safety of general anesthesia and the anesthesiologist work environment. It will also facilitate wider penetration of Total Intra-Venous Anesthesia (TIVA) practice, which has been associated with improved patient outcomes and reduced health-care costs," said Dr. Stéphane Bibian, NeuroWave's VP, Engineering and Clinical Research. "This Army contract will allow NeuroWave to apply its expertise to develop a closed-loop anesthesia device compliant with strict standards for medical devices. We are particularly grateful for this opportunity to bring the benefits of closed-loop anesthesia to our servicemen and women." said Tatjana Zikov, the President of NeuroWave.
